Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome is on the rise: What symptoms to watch for

Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome is being observed with increasing frequency, characterized by severe vomiting and abdominal pain in long-term cannabis users. Health experts warn that early recognition is key to preventing dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.

Some patients experience extreme nausea and vomiting with hot baths or showers providing temporary relief; in severe cases, dehydration and weight loss may occur, requiring medical treatment. A subset of cases has been colloquially named “scromiting,” denoting simultaneous vomiting and retching with abdominal cramps.

Public health officials urge awareness among users, clinicians, and caregivers about the symptoms, potential risk factors, and the importance of stopping cannabis use to resolve the condition, with attention to hydration and medical evaluation for persistence or escalation of symptoms.
